A Rich History
Founded in 1955 by the Newland family, Southern Kitchen has been serving historic New Market, VA with their family style dining for over 65 years. Purchased in 2019 by local residents Jimmy and Angie Shifflett, the restaurant remains a family owned and operated business, with the hope of passing on the tradition for generations to come. Jimmy and Angie both grew up with Southern Kitchen as a frequent family eatery. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week, this southern diner has something for everyone. They offer daily and weekend specials, featuring their famous BBQ ribs on Friday thru Sunday, and seafood Fridays, which often features the steamed spiced shrimp. The classic menu offers a variety of favorites, featuring their award winning fried chicken, hand cut steaks, burgers and sandwiches. There is also an assortment of homemade pies you won’t want to miss. And don’t forget about the famous peanut soup that you have to taste to believe. Southern Kitchen offers a variety of menu items, as well as a children’s menu. The classic southern cooking makes this restaurant a local favorite, as well as a great destination for visitors, but the southern hospitality is what keeps them coming back time and time again. Southern Kitchen is committed to keeping traditions and the old school recipes alive for the next 65 years.
